SUGIURA Hisui(1876-1965) was a pioneer of Japanese modern graphic design, and also known the first principal of Tama Imperial Art School (present Tama Art University) and the chief professor of the graphic design department. This exhibition shows his sophisticated design world.
Hisui was born in Matsuyama City, the prefectural capital of Ehime prefecture and studied Japanese traditional painting at Tokyo Fine Arts School (present Tokyo University of Arts) . He started his career as a graphic designer after his graduation. He designed many posters, book covers, magazine covers, wrapping materials and so on under the influence of Art Nouveau and Art Deco. His design was especialy famous for gorgeous posters and refined public relation magagines for long-well-established Mitsukoshi Department Store.
You could enjoy the wonderful creativity of Hisui with various kinds of item he designed, exquisite hundred-flower-image woodcut prints for which he painted the original sketch and Japanese traditional paintings in his later years.
