In the middle of the 19th century, artists of the flourishing Barbizon school in France gathered in the village of Barbizon in the suburbs of Paris, where they ardently began painting the serene rural landscapes and rustic farming figures.
Traditions from the elegant artwork of the Rococo period can be felt in their works, which feature pastoral characters in woodland surroundings.
Their method of producing artworks, painting natural landscapes that had been sketched in the open air, just as they were, had a great influence on the works of the Impressionists, which are filled with light and brightness.
In this exhibit, which commemorates the third anniversary of the opening of the Yamazaki Mazak Museum, we explore the appeal of French landscape artworks through the paintings and prints of the Barbizon school, alongside various Rococo and Impressionist artworks in the possession of this museum.
